It’s spring again, and most people do a bit of “Spring Cleaning” around their house. Not only should you wash windows, clean out closets, and dust the blinds, but this is a great time to do a little Spring Cleaning – Electrical Style as well.

Enjoy these tips from your home electrical contractor

  • Ensure you have no frayed or worn cords inside or outside your home. This will be one of the first thing home electrical contractors will look for. It’s a safety hazard, but relatively simple to take care of!
  • Be sure all the circuits in your main panel are correctly labeled to corresponding rooms, circuits, or outlets. Piper Electric’s home electrical contractors Inc. can help label any panel, commercial or residential!
  • Check for excessive movement when the washing machine or dryer is on, which can put stress on electrical or water connections.
  • Make sure the area around the dryer is free of clutter, and clean the dryer lint filter after each load, excessive lint in a dryer can pose a fire hazard. Or hire a professional to clean your dryer vent.
  • Locate all appliances away from the sink, and plug counter top appliances into ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs).
  • Keep appliance cords away from hot surfaces like the range or toaster. Unplug the toaster and other counter top appliances when not in use – not only can this save energy, but lessens the fire risk.
  • Any electric shock from an appliance can indicate a hazardous wiring condition. Turn the power to the appliance off at the circuit breaker, and do not touch the appliance until it has been checked by a licensed, qualified home electrical contractor.
  • Ensure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are installed on every level of your home and outside every sleeping area. Test these alarms to ensure that they are in working order, and replace the batteries if necessary. Piper Electric recommends the use of Lithium batteries in both of these types of home safety devices. When your lithium batteries need replacing it is also time to replace your home safety devices – about 10 years.
